Fire Safety In Buildings
We want to feel safe in the buildings in which we live and work

Heat
There must be heat to start and continue the combustion process. The temperature would have to be at an ignition level.

Oxygen
There must be air to supply oxygen. Places with strong airflow will
cause the spread to occur more rapidly.

Fuel
There must be fuel to burn, such as furniture, carpets, curtains and
more. Choosing non-combustible insulation reduces the potential fuel content.
WHY SHOULD I USE FIRE INSULATION?
Below you can see a video that talks you through fire safety and reaction and resistance.

Reaction and Resistance
Reaction and resistance are both key to assessing fire safety in building products. This is because reactions can cause the fire whilst resistance can prevent them. Watch video to learn more.
WHAT IS FIRE INSULATION?
Fire insulation (or more usually fire-rated or fire-resistant insulation) is a term that covers insulation materials which have insulative properties but are also non-combustible or have limited combustibility. A typical example is stone wool insulation which can be non-combustible.
Non-combustible insulation
Non-combustible products are the best option when it comes to fire-rated insulation. A product can be described as non-combustible if it receives a Euroclass A1 Fire Rating.

What is a fire classification?
All insulation materials are given a Euroclass reaction to fire classification, which helps us to understand how much 'fuel' will be added to the building, as well as how a material will contribute to the development stages of a fire.
Fire Insulation Types
There are several different types of fire insulation to choose from, we have chosen the best options for you.

Fiberglass
Fiberglass is now the most common form of insulation used in both private and commercial buildings. Fiberglass is moisture resistant and non-combustible.

Batt or Blanket Loft Insulation
This is probably the most common type of insulation. It is available in rolls of foil-backed felt, rock, glass or mineral fibre.
PROS
CONS

Mineral Wool
Mineral actually refers to several different types of insulation. Sometimes, its Glass Wool other times, it refers to Rock Wool and more commonly Slag Wool.

Loose-fill Loft Insulation
This is made from a variety of granular or lightweight materials such as cork granules, mineral wool or cellulose fibre. Greener types of loose-fill insulation include recycled newspaper.
PROS
CONS

Loose-fill cellulose insulation
Cellulose insulation is quickly becoming a very popular choice for builders. The safety rating is rapidly improving which will elbow out other forms of insulation.

Sheet Loft Insulation
Sheet insulation is designed for insulating the sloping sides of the roof and comes in the form of firm boards. Some sheet insulation boards are available with a fire-resistant, moisture-resistant or decorative covering. It can be ordered precut to specific sizes, usually at an additional cost.
PROS
HOW DOES FIRE INSULATION WORK?
Fireproof materials are able to reduce the flow of heat through the thickness of the material. Fireproof materials, also known a s fire-retardants, are able to withstand extremely high temperatures and are designed to help slow the spread of fire.
