Tips for gardening in the Summer.

In the heat of the summer, the entire garden comes to life and plant growth is at its fastest. From picking your vegetables to battling with common pests, you will have your work cut out in the summer months. Fortunately, you can make this easier with good practice and a few tips here and there. Read on to find out how you can make gardening life easier this summer.

Stay on top of the weeds

Weeds are enemy number 1 during the summer. Making sure to stay on top of the weed growth in your garden allows you to keep a healthy garden. There are several ways you can remove and even prevent weed growth. Weeding wet soil allows you to pull up the entire weed easier without risking losing any behind. Using mulch is the best way of preventing weed growth, applying a lot of mulch is effective and highly available. Another good way of preventing weeds is to overcrowd them with plants. Growing more and not allowing the weeds any room is an effective way of preventing weeds and giving yourself some extra harvest in the process. Whichever method you use, make sure you clear the weeds and give your plants the best chance of growth this summer.

Make sure to consider heat and water

When gardening in the intense heat of the summer, it's important to remember to keep yourself safe. Take regular breaks, drink plenty and apply suncream to protect you while you are outside. It's also important to remember to care for your plants. Keeping your plants well-watered and ventilated is important to keeping your plants healthy. Watering plants in the morning allows your plants to retain the moisture for longer and protects the leaves from the heat of the sun when watered. Additionally, it is important to care for your grass in the summer. Cutting the grass too short can damage the roots and cause your lawn to go brown. Make sure to raise the cutting height to start with. protect the grass by raising the height and gradually lowering the height throughout the summer. this allows your grass to stay healthy and green during the summer. In the event that your grass does go brown, just leave it to grow back on its own.

Remember to prune

During the summer months, it can benefit you to get ahead on your pruning. Making a clean cut above the bud, you can prune shrubs and trees. Pruning is important as it allows you to change the structure of the plant, as well as remove diseased branches. Pruning can be done for a multitude of reasons but is most effective during the summer as it allows plants to flower or fruit, and helps healthy growth.

Also, a good year's harvest from your crops can result in too much produce. there are a few ways you can deal with this. Firstly, freezing your produce can help if you can't keep on top of your crops. wash, bag and freeze vegetables to preserve your hard work for later on. Also, your neighbours might appreciate a few potatoes or courgettes. Giving away some spare produce can help reduce waste and free up some storage space.

Time to fertilise

There couldn't be a better time of year to give your plants a feed. Giving your plants a boost through the summer while they are growing allows them to remain healthy and keep producing fruit or flowers. Fertiliser can be found relatively cheap and give your plants the needed nutrients the soil may not give them.
